The Ondo and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Delta teams have emerged champions of the second edition of Samsung Beach Volleyball Championship for Men and Women respectively
In the competition played at the Jabi Lake beach volleyball court, the teams overcame stiff opposition to excel in the championship organised to further advance and promote beach volleyball in the country.
To emerge victorious, Team Ondo beat Delta 2-0, winning 21-13, 21-12 to claim the men’s competition and smile home with a cash prize of N150,000 and Samsung electronic products. In the third place match, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) beat Bayelsa 22-20, 21-13, to claim third place prize of N100, 000. Team Delta who finished second got cash prize of N120, 000.
In the women’s category, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) overwhelmed Delta in the final, while Bayelsa beat Delta in the third-place match.
Speaking on the competition, director general of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Dr Patrick Ekeji represented by Dr Emmanuel Igbinoja, assistant director elite athletes commended Samsung for helping to promote beach volleyball development from the grassroots and NSC continuous support in developing the sports. “Nigeria has not been doing badly in beach volleyball but we still need to do more. And to encourage the development of beach volleyball in the country,it will now feature in the National Sports Festival starting from next year edition in Calabar as a medal winning sport,” he said.
