Ogun House of Assembly on Thursday summoned the Commissioner of Police? in the state, Mr Ikemefuna Okoye, to appear before it on Friday over a students’ riot at Tai- Solarin College of Education,(TASCE), Omu, Ijebu.
The summon followed a motion moved by the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Mr Adeyinka Mafe, at plenary in Abeokuta on a? matter of urgent national importance.
Mafe, representing Sagamu I, said that more than 190 students of TASCE were allegedly? arrested by the police for rioting.
He said the commissioner should explain who authorised the police to fire live bullets on the students, which led to the death of four of them.
“The commissioner of police should come and explain who gave the police the order to fire live bullets on the harmless students,’’ he said.
The Speaker, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, also ordered the Area Commander of Police in Ijebu Ode and the Divisional Police Officer to appear before the assembly on the matter.
“Also to appear are the Commissioner for Education, Mr Segun Odubela, the provost of the college and the representative of the Students Union Government,’’ he said.
He said that appearance of those invited would shed more light on the incident with a view to finding a solution to the problem.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a riot erupted in the college on Tuesday when some students, who allegedly owed school fees, insisted that they must be allowed to sit for examinations.
NAN learnt that the college authorities viewed the action of the students as contrary to the order stopping them from sitting for the examinations unless they paid their fees.
The students were said to have stormed the examination halls to disrupt the examinations and subsequently a? riot ensued leading to the college authority inviting the police to restore order. (NAN)
