Archbishop of the Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan has maintained that the notorious Boko Haram sect has religious undertone.
He was responding to Governor Babangida Aliyu, who posited that the sect has nothing to do with Islam. Aliyu in the keynote address maintained that the sect is in no way Islamic in nature and in fact, has no connection to Islam as a religion.
But speaking on the topic “Rebuilding Nigeria”, at the annual conference and awards ceremony of LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group, Onaiyekan noted that regardless of what many may think, the sect has religious undertone.
He however made a case for amnesty, noting that there was need to do everything possible to end the spate of killing and destruction currently going on.
