The premiere of the biopic about Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a distinguished Nigerian educator, activist, and mother of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, took place on Sunday, May 12.
Uti Nwachukwu hosted the event, which saw the attendance of the film’s cast and crew, as well as notable guests such as the governors of Lagos and Ogun states, Babajide Sanwo–Olu and Dapo Abiodun.
The highly anticipated film follows the life of Madam Ransome-Kuti, chronicles her journey from her days at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage with Israel Ransome-Kuti, and her fight against colonialism and patriarchy through the Abeokuta Women’s Union.
The film is directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and written by Tunde Babalola .
Seasoned Nollywood stars and veteran actors like Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, Adunni Ade, Adebayo Salami, Omowunmi Dada, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, Ibrahim Suleiman, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, Yewande Osamein, and Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko star in the film.
The biopic was among the Nigerian feature films selected for screening at the 12th Africa International Film Festival (ARIFF 2023), and yesterday, it won the Best Writing Movie at the 10th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award.

The film will be released in cinemas across the country from May 17.
The guests attend the event wearing traditional attire that reflects the styles of the times of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
