Kaduna Refinery Empowers 405 Youths

The Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), has offered skills training to 405 youths as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Its Managing Director, Mr Bolanle Ayodele said on Thursday in Kaduna that the beneficiaries were trained under the company's Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Programme, started in 2008.

He said at the presentation of certificates to 105 participants of the 2012 programme, that the company had set up a grant with a micro finance bank in Kaduna to be accessed by any of those trained to establish their own businesses.

Ayodele explained that the partnership with the bank was due to the ``low success rate'' recorded in assisting those who graduated earlier.

The managing director expressed appreciation to the host communities for providing ``harmonious and peaceful environment'' for the company's operations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the participants acquired skills in 10 trades, including construction, poultry and fisheries.

In his speech, Gov. Mukhtar Yero commended the KRPC for its support in addressing the unemployment challenges in the state, and pledged to tap its experience in the implementation of similar programmes by the state government.

Police Arraign Grandmother, Grandson For Stealing Tubers Of Yam

The police in Kwara on Wednesday arraigned a 65-year old grandmother, Ajeigbe Agboola and her 14-year old grandson before an Omu-Aran Upper Area Court for allegedly stealing tubers of yam.

Agboola, a trader, who lives at Oke-Agbo Area, Ilofa and her grandson are standing trial on a three-count charge of trespass, theft and receiving stolen property.

The prosecutor, Insp. Moodi Ata, said that one Jacob Ipetu of Oke-Osin compound, Ilofa, reported the theft on Jan. 31.

Ata said Ipetu told the police that on Jan. 22, he saw the accused persons and Kehinde Agboola (now at large), removing some tubers of yam.

He told the court that police investigation into the case revealed that Ajeigbe received the stolen yams from Kehinde, her son.

Ata said the offence contravened sections 287, 317 and 342 of the Penal Code.

Ajeigbe pleaded guilty to the charge.

Presiding officer, Mr Fagbemi Adeyemi, in his ruling, admitted the accused to bail.

He ordered the prosecutor to arraign the second accused in a juvenile court because he was a minor.

Adeyemi said that the transfer of the minor's case to a juvenile court was necessary because the court lacked jurisdiction.

He granted Ajeigbe bail for N20,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case to April 2 for sentencing.(NAN)

Court Sentences Man, 35, To 3 Months Jail-Term For Begging

An Upper Sharia Court One in Zaria on Wednesday sentenced one Salmanu Abubakar to three-months jail term for begging falsely on behalf of a mosque.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar, a resident of Abubakar Gumi Road, Funtua in Katsina State was, however, given an option of N3, 000 fine.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ibrahim Husseini, said that Abubakar was arrested at the Sabon-Gari Local Government Secretariat mosque begging people to donate money “for the sake of Allah” towards a mosque-building project in his area.

He said that luck ran out for the accused as some people in the mosque identified him as a dupe going from mosque to mosque, deceiving people and collecting money from them.

Hussaini said Abubakar was questioned by the people but could not give satisfactory account of himself.

The act, according to the prosecutor, is contrary to section 368 of the Sharia Penal code.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

Delivering judgment, the Judge, Mohammed Gaudo-Ahmed, said: "You have pleaded guilty and therefore sentenced to three months jail term or an option of fine of N3, 000."

He also warned the convict against committing the same or similar offence over the next 12 months. (NAN)
