Sokoto Spends N8.8bn On First Phase Of Varsity — Ardo

The Sokoto State Government has spent more than N8.8 billion on the first phase of its university in Sokoto, the Special Adviser on Higher Education, Prof. Gajam Ardo, has said.?

Ardo told a Press Conference in Sokoto yesterday that the structures under the phase, which have reached an appreciable level of completion, would be completed in the next nine months.

He said that the structures included hostels, administrative blocks, lecture halls, library and other auxiliary structures.
The special adviser also said that the university was expected to commence operations with the faculties of science, education and social sciences.

“These faculties are expected to commence with about five hundred students and they will take-off in the 2012/2013 academic session”, he said.
Ardo also announced that the university was already shopping for a vice-chancellor, who can come from any part of the world.
“But the pre-condition is that he or she must be a former vice-chancellor of a university for him to have the wealth of experience required to steer the new institution to great heights.

“We had since placed an advertisement in the newspapers for the vice-chancellor, principal officers and other academic, as well as non-academic staff”, Ardo said.?
The special adviser, who is also the chairman of the university’s implementation committee, added that already the committee was in receipt of about 1,400 applications for employment.
“But we will only employ 103 of them and we will ensure justice, equity and fair play in anything about the university”, he said.
