The Nupe Foundation has called for strict punishment against those behind the students’ unrest at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State on September 26, 2011, that led to the destruction of the institution’s facilities.
The president of the foundation, Engineer Yabagi Sani, in an interview in Bida yesterday condemned the students’ unnecessary unrest over the alleged loss of manhood (genitals).?
“It is totally uncalled for and cannot be accepted in our society; we are peace loving people in the land we therefore condemn such act” he said. “We want all persons, be them students, lecturers or management staff, who were behind the unrest to be identified and punished according to the laws of the land, in the interest peace and stability of the country”.
The foundation, according to Sani, therefore called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to fish out those behind the unrest to serve as a deterrent to potential future offenders.
“We cannot allow students to take the laws into their hands and embark on the destruction of property of both the institution and those belonging to members of the public in the town,” he stated. “The foundation also urged the institution’s management to ensure that they adopt proactive measures in tackling students’ problem before they get out hand and lead to unwanted consequences for the institution and the larger society.”
According to him the foundation would continue to support any action that would bring about the development of education in the area and the larger society as well as the general welfare of students within the community.
It would be recalled that the students of the institution last Monday invaded the streets to protest the alleged loss of manhood of three students, causing damage to the institute’s computer centre, administrative block and the library, which led to the closure of the school indefinitely.
