Nigerians, mostly those resident in Gwagwalada area council and other suburbs of the FCT along the axis, have continued to decry the traffic jam on the Giri-Gwagwalada Road, which they noted, has become a permanent feature on the road.
The residents have called on the government to intervene in the situation.
A cross-section of people interviewed, were pessimistic the situation would persist unless the government sees to the speedy completion of the on-going construction work on the road.
One of them, Adams Okiro said, “The construction work has been going on for so long now.? It has gotten to a stage when the federal government should set up a committee to ascertain what exactly is wrong and what steps should be taken to solve the problem.”
A student of the University of Abuja, Grace Okpo, who is resident in Garki, also stated that the traffic congestion had caused untold hardship to students of the institution, some of whom had missed examinations because of the problem.
“The other day, I had lecture for 10am and I left my house early enough. I was at? Giri Junction at? 8am but the traffic that day was so bad it got to a point that I had to alight from the bus and pick a motorcycle to take me to school, in order not to miss my class,” she said.
A staff of Kwali area council, resident in Madalla, Tony Abraham, attributed the incessant traffic jam on the road to drivers’ impatience. He noted that if drivers tried to be a little more patient with fellow road users, the situation would be different.
“The impatience of Nigerian drivers is the cause of the terrible holdup. If the drivers will be patient and wait for their turn, we will not be experiencing this magnitude of traffic hold-up on the road. Everybody wants to get to their destination, at any risk.
“The heavy duty vehicles plying the road also compound the problem. There is hardly any day that passes that you won’t find a broken down truck or lorry on the road. The other day, a truck was trying to reverse and the rear tire got struck and it blocked one side of the road. And you can just imagine the congestion it caused,” he said.
