A total of 1,532 motorists have been arrested for committing 1,782 traffic offences since the “Operation Sanity’’ in the Federal Capital Teritory (FCT) was launched on Oct. 18, according to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRCN).
Mr Nseobong Akpabio, the Public Education Officer of the Commission, told newsmen on Wednesday at the enforcement venue of the “Operation Sanity’’? in Abuja.
Akpabio said that the motorists were arrested for failure to use seat belts, making phone calls while driving, dangerous driving and driving without licence.
He said that out of the 1,532 offenders arrested, 172 had been arraigned before the mobile court which had convicted 127 offenders from two weeks to one-month imprisonment.
He said the convicted were, however, given options of fines.
The FRSC spokesman said that the campaign would last for a month aimed at making motorists imbibe the culture of adherence to traffic rules and regulations in the FCT.
