The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has called on the Federal Government to take prompt measures to address security challenge in Zamfara State before it spreads to other parts of the country, especially in view of recent security challenges facing the nation.
The national chairman of the party, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who made the call during a chat with journalists in Abuja yesterday, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to deploy security agencies to the affected areas to contain the situation as well as to ensure that appropriate surveillance measures are put in place to check its spread.
He commended the efforts so far taken by the Zamfara State Government to arrest the situation.
“We are solidly behind the state governor who has shown dynamism and worked tirelessly to contain the situation in the affected areas of the state. We urged him not to relent in his efforts until the problem is solved.
“We also commend the good people of Zamfara State, who have remained calm in the face of these unwarranted attacks by the people from outside our dear country.”
The ANPP Chairman further called on the governors of the South-East States to work with the Federal Government to arrest the activities of kidnappers and make sure that a permanent solution is found to stimulate economic and social progress in the area.
Onu further condemned the recent unlawful arrest and detention of senior editorial personnel of The Nation Newspapers by security agents. “This brazen use of forces against journalist is unacceptable, especially in a democracy. There must be a difference between a dictatorship and a democracy. Infractions on the right of either individuals or institutions by the media should be resolved by the court,” he said.
