Super Falcons attacking midfielder, Stella Mbachu, has tipped her teammate, Perpetua Nkwocha to emerge the 2011 African women’s footballer of the year.
CAF on Wednesday short-listed the reigning player of the year and Super Falcons forward alongside South African Noupumelelo Nyandani and Equatorial Guinean Miriam Palxao for the coveted awards. The awards gala night will come up on Thursday, December 22 at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra.
Mbachu told SuperSport.com that Nkwocha stands pole ahead of other nominees to grab the award for the third times. “Nkwocha is the clear favourite to win the award.
“She still holds the title and I think she has done very well to retain it. Other nominees are unknown, even their names are strange to me. If merit is the watchword, Nkwocha will emerge the winner,” Mbachu stated.
The Rivers Angels’ goal poacher reinstated that despite the poor result that has hit Falcons of late, they remain a force to be reckoned with in Africa.
“Super Falcons are still number one in Africa not minding our current form at the moment.
“Nigeria may not have played at the 2011 All Africa Games and the forthcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, but you can’t discuss women football in Africa without mentioning Nigeria.
“What we are facing at the moment is momentary, we will overcome it and take our rightful position once again,” she said.
