Mr Olusegun Solomon, the Commissioner of Police in Osun, said that two men were apprehended by the Police Anti-Bomb squad in Ile-Ife for possessing a substantial quantity of dynamite.
The police chief, who disclosed this on Friday at a news briefing in Osogbo, said that the suspects were intercepted by the squad during a stop-and-search operation in the town.
He, however, said that one of the suspects escaped shortly after they were stopped for a search.
Solomon said that the police apprehended the two suspects, who were travelling on a commercial motorcycle, when it was noticed that they were carrying a mysterious package.
“While the policemen were examining the substance in their possession, one of them escaped, while the second man was arrested.”
“The arrested suspect, who claimed to be a water driller, could not give a legal proof or produce a licence to indicate how he came about the explosive,” he said.
The commissioner noted that the fact that one of the suspects ran away when the police intercepted them showed that they had some ulterior motives for travelling with the explosive.
Solomon said that the suspects could be members of a terrorist group or a bank robbery syndicate which specialised in using dynamites during robbery operations.
