The Joint Task Force (JTF) on Operation Restore Order (ODO) on Saturday warned the media against misinforming the public on the Boko Haram crisis.
Lt.-Col. Hassan Ifijeh, the JTF spokesman, gave the warning while briefing newsmen in Maiduguri.
Ifijeh said that the information disseminated by foreign media that there was a bomb blast in a mosque in Maiduguri on Friday was erroneous.
“The report of the a blast in a mosque was erroneous. In fact, we were shocked by the report. We have spoken to the organisations concerned.
“Unfortunately they got the story from an unfounded source in Lagos, which is really sad.”
He said it was sad that the organisations decided to work on the report without seeking reactions from the JTF.
“We have warned them and asked them to stop the practice.
“We are also appealing to media organisations to always cross-check their information before going to press.”
He explained that what happened was only an attempted armed robbery at the Monday Market, Maiduguri, which was foiled by the JTF.
