Employment agency trains 400 jobless graduates

The National
Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Cross River State said on Wednesday
that it had trained 400 unemployed graduates under its Graduate
Attachment Programme (GAP).

The state
coordinator, Edem Duke, said this in Calabar at the orientation and
sensitisation workshop for graduates of the GAP at the Federal
Secretariat, Calabar.

He said that the
training programme would help to empower the graduates as it would
chart “a highway out of the wilderness of unemployment.”

Mr. Duke said that the federal government embarked on GAP to reduce the high rate of graduate unemployment in the country.

The NDE is aware
that most fresh graduates of tertiary institutions find it difficult to
secure paid employment as a result of skills mismatch and lack of
cognate experience required by both the public and private sectors of
the economy,” he said.

He explained that
the GAP of the Special Public Works Department (SPW) was designed to
provide graduates practical experience and skills in establishments
where their services are needed.
