NEITI To Partner Stakeholders On Transparency

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI)? has expressed its readiness to partner stakeholders and civil society organisations, to enthrone transparency in the extractive sector.

The Executive Secretary of NEITI, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, gave the assurance on Friday in Abuja at the closing ceremony of a National Conference, organised by NEITI.

She said the inaugural NEITI National Conference, was part of effort to strengthen partnership with stakeholders in the extractive sector and enlighten the public on the operations of the company.

“The NEITI National Conference is a deliberate effort by NEITI to expand the scope of the ongoing dialogue in the extractive sector.

“We have tried to bring stakeholders in the extractive industry to a forum where discussions can be made freely and issues discussed freely on transparency and accountability in the sector.”

She commended the Federal Government and the Minister of Petroleum Resources for setting up various bodies to look into the issue of transparency, accountability and efficiency in the oil and gas sector.

Ahmed said the bodies would complement NEITI’s work and fast-track accountability in the extractive sector.

She disclosed that NEITI would soon begin to sanction government agencies, oil companies and firms that failed to provide adequate information about their revenues as enshrined in the NEITI Act.

The two- day conference was attended by government officials, captains of industry, civil society organisations and oil companies.
