Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, the out-going Acting National Chairman of the PDP, has told the incoming executive of the party to take the issue of discipline in the party seriously.
Baraje gave the advice on Saturday at the Ninth National Convention of the party at the Eagle Square, Abuja, convened to elect officials to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.
The PDP chieftain regretted that the absence of a functional disciplinary committee in the party had marred its efforts at punishing erring members, warning that the party should take the issue of discipline seriously to remain strong.
“A situation where there was no disciplinary committee limited our efforts in carrying out sanctions against erring members, discipline must be addressed by the incoming leadership,” he said.
According to Baraje, the excesses of pressure groups within the party must be check-mated to make sure that they operate within the ambits of the party’s constitution.
Baraje noted that there was need to review the party’s constitution to enhance its credibility.
In his speech, the party's out-going Acting National Secretary, Alhaji Musa Babayo, said the party had “worked tirelessly to institutionalise democracy in the country.”
He said that the party had been a veritable tool for national unity, noting that it had “successfully conducted congresses at ward levels which culminated in the national convention.“
It will be recalled that the PDP had on March 21, inaugurated a 75-man National Convention Committee, headed by? Chief Ojo Maduekwe, to conduct convention.
