The FRSC says the United Nations has adopted its road safety management model into its decade of action on road safety.
Mr Osita Chidoka, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer of FRSC, announced the adoption at a meeting with sector commanders in Abuja on Wednesday.
Chidoka quoted the UN as saying that the model could be effectively used to realise its goal of reducing accidents and deaths by 50 per cent by 2020.
He said the adoption was a challenge to the FRSC to redouble its operational strategy to meet the expectations of Nigerians and deliver on the mandate of the UN in the next 10 years.
Chidoka charged the sector commanders to step up their field patrols to realise the objective of the decade of action.
“The thrust of this meeting is for us to undertake a vigorous and holistic review of challenges facing the corps.’’
The corps marshal said there was a 15 per cent reduction in deaths from road accidents in the first quarter of 2012.
He urged the commanders to work with the Nigerian Medical Association, Nigerian Bar Association and the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the states to further reduce casualties on the roads.
