Ekweremadu Emphasises Intellectual Building For Legislators

The Deputy Senate President, yesterday emphasised the need for intellectual empowerment for legislators and their aides in order to effectively deal with the diverse and technical issues in keeping with their responsibilities.

Ekweremadu stated this when he declared open a two-day retreat for Special Advisers/Assistants and legislative aides to presiding officers of the National Assembly organised by the National Institute for Legal Studies (NILS).

According to the Deputy Senate President who doubles as the chairman of the Council for NILS, said the retreat was to deal with the lack of capacity to cope with the dynamic duties of the legislative aides.

“Based on the diverse and technical issues faced by legislators in discharging their duties, the need for intellectual update of both the legislators and their aides became so necessary.

However, one thing that is clear is that capacity to cope with the dynamic duties of the legislative aides is somehow lacking. This explains the cardinal objective of the training.” He said.

On her part, the Director General of NILS, Dr. Ladi Hamalai, said the use of legislative aides is necessary for effective legislative duties in all democratic
