The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has offered?free medical services to more than 1000 patients as part of activities to?commemorate its 50th anniversary, an official has said.
The?Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, Prof. Olugbenga Ogunlewe, told the?News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that?some of the services were also?subsidised for the?patients.
“We went to some communities and offered free health screening for the residents.
“We referred those found to be with one ailment or the other to the appropriate departments in the hospital for treatment.
?”We conducted free eye, diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, breast, cervical and prostate cancer screening. People were given tallies to be treated in the appropriate clinics,” she said.
She said that the hospital also catered for the health needs of indigent patients who were unable to pay for their treatment.
The chairman added that the hospital?had also?subsidised the cost of treatment for patients?with eye cataract.
“This is our way of giving back to the community. We have discovered that a lot of people, due to their everyday busy lives, find it difficult to go to hospitals,” Ogunlewe said.
She said that the exercise was conducted in partnership with some?organisations and called for more?donations.
“We are calling on?individuals and corporate organisations to donate generously to the hospital so that we can treat more ailments locally and discourage medical tourism,” Ogunlewe said. (NAN)
