Following on from yesterdays look at the best Africans in England this season, we turn our attention to the Spanish La Liga.
5. Romaric (Sevilla/Cote d’Ivoire)
Appearances/goals: 24/1
The 27-year-old is in his third season as Sevilla and it is arguably his best as he develops into a magnificent holding midfielder. Full name Christian Koffi Romaric N’Dri, he has become more influential for Cote dIvoire over the past two seasons too, and would have played more this campaign were it not for injuries. Still, a fine performer.
4. Mehdi Lacen (Racing Santander/Algeria)
Appearances/goals: 31/1
Lacen will be joining Getafe on a free transfer at the end of the season and how Racing Santander will miss him. He has been a rock for them in the midfield this campaign, just three players at Racing have more appearances. Born in France, he plays for Algeria and at 26 years old is probably yet to reach his peak either.
3. Carlos Kameni (Espanyol/Cameroon)
Appearances/goals: 31/0
Kameni has been one of the top goalkeepers in the Spanish La Liga for some seven seasons now. He has been his usual consistent self this year, helping Espanyol to a healthy eighth position on the log, and still in with a shout of making the UEFA Europa League next season. With very few African goalkeepers in the top leagues anywhere in Europe, he is a shining light.
2. Derek Boateng (Getafe/Ghana)
Appearances/goals: 30/2
The 28-year-old has been a star performer in a Getafe side that has largely struggled this year. But that certainly has nothing to do with the performances of Boateng, who has been immense for them in the holding midfield role. There are suggestions he might be headed for a bigger club come the end of the season.
1. Seydou Keita (Barcelona/Mali)
Appearances/goals: 33/2
Keita is part of a star-studded squad of arguably the best footballers in the world, yet he never looks out of place among them and never lets the side down when chosen. The midfielder has played over 30 games this season, which is an excellent effort when you look at the competition for midfield places at Barcelona. He is a consistently top performer.
