A labour leader in PHCN, Mr Bede Opara, has called for immediate inauguration of an implementation committee to oversee the disengagement process of PHCN workers.
Opara, President General, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.
He said that failure to inaugurate the implementation committee would stall progress on the disengagement of PHCN staff.
“We have agreed with the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) that an implementation committee comprising us, government and other stakeholders should be inaugurated to oversee PHCN staff disengagement.
“But up till now that committee has not been inaugurated.
“We hope that those calculation errors we pointed in what government wants to pay as severance package to each staff will be looked into by the committee.
“The rescheduled meeting with the BPE to discuss the technical issues and about the formation of the committee has not held up till now, “ he said.
Opara said that it would be more profitable for the government to engage PHCN unions in? constructive discussion to bring sanity to the process of paying-off the staff.
NAN recalls that the Federal Government on Wednesday announced that it would commence the payment of N384 billion severance packages from Feb. 21.
Trade unions in the PHCN rejected the offer barely 24 hours after government’s announcement. ?(NAN)
