The number of elderly persons on N5,000 monthly stipend? by Ekiti State Government under its social security scheme has risen to 19,270.
Mr Oluwole Ariyo, the State Commissioner for Labour, Employment and Human Capital Development, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)? in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday that the number could still increase.
According to him, many more indigent elders are being registered on daily basis.
“This government has passion for our senior citizens who are indigent? the same way it has passion for the youth and civil servants.
“Our policy is that no one should be left to suffer, no matter the political belief,” he said.
Ariyo said government would continue to? review the list of? beneficiaries to capture all qualified elderly people? while expunging? the? names of those who might have died.
He? called on all indigent elders,? who were not pensioners and were above 65 years that had yet to key into the programme,? to register at designated centres as soon as possible.
