The Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN) has presented certificate of accreditation and recognition to some tertiary institutions and training centres which had satisfied its quality control parameters for accreditation and recognition.
A total of 25 tertiary institutions which include 14 universities and 11 polytechnics benefited from the accreditation, while 10 tuition centres were also honoured during the 11th edition of presentation of accreditation ceremony that was held in Lagos.
Some of the beneficiaries in the university category include, Bayero University, Kano; Enugu State University of Science and Technology, University of Lagos, Abia State University, Uturu; Adamawa State University, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, among others.
The 48th President of ICAN, Mr. Adedoyin Owolabi in a key note address at the award ceremony, said as a professional body committed to technical excellence, the institute proactively began to accredit institutions of higher learning and tuition houses in 1972 when it realised the need to initiate quality control and improve the level of pass rate of students in its various examinations.
Owolabi noted that in line with its statutory mandate of setting standards and regulating the practice of accountancy in the country, the council resolved to accredit centers where its potential registered students could receive appropriate and qualitative technical and academic training.
“Accreditation exercise was designed to reaffirm the institute’s commitment to high technical standards as well as facilitate the choice of academic institutions/tuition centers by our numerous students in their quest for accounting knowledge. Simply put, accreditation exercise is one of the quality control measures designed to align the quality of knowledge dissemination by these institutions to global standards on which we benchmark our training curricula,” he said.
Owolabi said that the institute’s accreditation certificates mark the recipient institutions out as outstanding places for learning, particularly when it is considered that its accreditation criteria are stiffer than those of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
He explained that in order to ensure that accreditation institutions do not compromise to the set standards, visitations are usually conducted every four years, which according to him such re-visit affords the team the opportunity to conform whether the institution has addressed the weaknesses highlighted during the previous visit.?
