Mr James Erebuoye, a human right activist, on Saturday advised the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to present candidates base on merit in the 2015 general elections.
Erebuoye, who gave the advice while briefing newsmen in Abuja, said the quest for good governance would be achieved through the emergence of credible leaders and electioneering process.
He commended the PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Bamaga Tukur, for maintaining his stand on non-imposition of candidates in the party as such would bring the party to success in the future elections.
“I want to thumb up for the leadership of the PDP under Tukur, who stood firm to ensure that the party presents the best candidates in the forth coming elections.
“We in the Diaspora will support him in his quest to change the nation’s leadership profile so that our country can move to the next level.
“I can see Tukur changing PDP, especially in the area of fielding candidates, who are most acceptable by the people rather than presenting candidates base on sentiments.
“With Tukur’s kind of leadership, especially with his unresolved efforts to reunite the aggrieved party members, PDP will win more seats in the next general election.
“Although I am an activist but my concern is for leaders to emerge through merit so that Nigerians can enjoy true democracy,’’ he said.
Erebuoye, who is also an anti-corruption crusader, said the emergence of right candidates would bring the issue of corruption to its barest minimum.
He said that candidates, who emerged through flawed process, would not give their best and might not be ready to account for their stay in offices.
While calling on various political party leaders to emulate Tukur, Erebuoye appealed to PDP to support their chairman to stabilise their party.
“I am also advising other political party leaders to emulate the kind of leadership that Tukur is giving to PDP.
“Tukur may not be finding it easy, but change must come and such changes cannot be peaceful.
