Piqued by the problem of flooding, which recently displaced many families in the Lagos metropolis, Lagos State governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola has ordered the immediate demolition of a church built on a drainage channel in Bariga area of the state.
Fashola, who continued the inspection of flooding sites in the state on Tuesday, vowed to pull down all buildings erected on the path of drainage channels, blaming the casualties recorded in the massive flood that swept across the state on distortion of the state built environment by certain individuals.
The governor, while inspecting flooded areas in Bariga axis of Lagos, said a Pentecostal church named Faith of Christ Evangelical Church must be demolished because it was built on Awofodu canal, thereby blocking free flow of water in the community.
Fashola pointed out that the major problem confronting the city was that of indiscipline on the part of most of its inhabitants who, he sai, preferred to break the law and do the wrong thing to the detriment of other residents who pay the price when disasters occur.
He appealed to residents of Lagos to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the drains, noting that haphazard way of building without approval from the government would no longer be tolerated by the government.
