Lepers in the Alheri Special Village, Koroko Yangoji, in Kwali area council, have made an appeal to the government to intervene and bring to an end the six year electricity problem in the village.
The head of the village, Sarki Kutare, Ali Isa, made the appeal when the wife of Kwali area council chairman, Mrs. Saratu Shazin, visited the village.
According to him, the faulty transformer in the area had plunged the village into darkness for over six years.
He said, “For six years now, we have not had light and it is really affecting us. The other day, I killed a snake in my room but I know the snake would not have crept in without my notice if there was light.
The Sarki Kutare also lamented that there were no drugs in their clinic and added that his people were not accepted for treatment at the general hospital. He further appealed to the government to help in the procurements of drugs which would help the sick among them receive prompt medical care.
The village head further lamented that out of three water pumping machines they had; only one was functional and pleaded that the other two be repaired so that they will have easy access to water.
The women of the village also expressed their desire to learn vocational skills to enable them be self reliant and called on the government to come to their aid.
Speaking in a separate interview, the chairman of Kwali area council, Mr. Joseph Kwali, explained that the hospital was a Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) sponsored hospital, while the provision of drugs for the hospital was handled by the Nigeria Leprosy Mission because the people had to use special drugs.
He however assured that even though the centre was not within the jurisdiction of the area council, it would do all within its power to support it.
“The area council has donated a grinding machine, which we are yet to mount it. The mounting of the machine will be seen to soon. In the case of the faulty transformer, I have approved that the faulty one should be repaired or a new one should be installed. The only thing holding it now is the release of funds,” he said.
